**A Year of Brutal Conflict in Ukraine**
Ukraine faced a tough year in 2024. The city of Avdiivka fell to the Russian army after months of fighting. This was made worse by delayed aid from the US due to political disagreements, which left Ukraine with limited resources.
**Spring and Summer Attacks**
In the spring, Russia launched intense attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This damaged or destroyed at least half of the country’s power supplies, leading to long blackouts throughout the summer. The war also continued into the year-end, despite new fighter jets arriving in July.
**Russian Attacks on Civilians**
Russia targeted civilian areas, including a major children’s hospital in Kyiv. The city of Vovchansk was also badly hit, with 80% of its buildings destroyed and thousands forced to leave their homes.
**Killing of Ukrainian POWs**
Ukraine reported the systematic killing of its prisoners of war by Russia, with at least 109 confirmed deaths this year.
**The Never-Ending War**
The conflict took a toll on Ukraine’s people. Many mourned the loss of prominent figures like poets and activists. However, prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia brought back over 1,000 people this year.
**A Glimpse of Joy**
A rare moment of joy came when Ukrainian athletes won medals at the Paris Olympics, including a gold medal for high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh.
**Looking to the Future**
