A young man from Georgia, Mate Devidze, has been arrested for attacking police during a protest. He is 21 years old and faces up to seven years in prison.
The incident happened on November 19th in Tbilisi’s central area. Police used force to break up a peaceful demonstration that was protesting the results of the October 26 elections. After the dispersal, protesters moved to another street where they clashed with police.
According to witnesses, Devidze attacked police officers while he was trying to escape. He is seen on video swinging a stick at one of them as he runs away from police.
It’s not clear if the officer was hit or hurt during the confrontation. The investigation into this incident has been opened under Georgia’s Criminal Code.
This arrest comes at a time when there have been concerns about police behavior and treatment of protesters in Georgia. Some people have accused the police of using excessive force and making false statements to punish activists, opposition members, and critics.
The court will now decide what happens to Devidze next. His case is being watched closely by human rights groups and others who are concerned about police behavior in Georgia.
