Ukraine currently has 55,000 listed as missing under special circumstances, according to Deputy Interior Leonid Tymchenko in interview with Ukrinform on September 26. These individuals have disappeared due to war, occupation, or natural and man-made disasters.

The number highlights the devastating impact of Russia’ full-scale war on Ukraine, which has resulted in illegal deportations, kidnappings, and number of casualties among both personnel and civilians.

Tymchenko explained that the register is constantly changing as the whereabouts of missing persons are discovered. In some cases, it is revealed that a person is being held captive. Unfortunately, there are also cases where missing individuals are found to have died.

This figure is a significant increase from July, when the Interior Ministry reported 42,000 missing . However, this number does not include the more than 19,500 who have been forcibly deported to Russia, Belarus, or occupied territories.

The situation in Ukraine is dire, with Russian aggression causing immense suffering and loss. It is important for the community to recognize and address this humanitarian crisis.
