On October 3, the regional administration reported that Russian forces attacked 14 communities in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy Oblast, injuring eight people throughout the day. This region lies at the border with Russia and has been the target of increased strikes since Ukraine launched a cross-border incursion into neighboring Kursk Oblast. The administration stated that Russia struck the Sumy community 82 times and used drones, causing injuries to eight people. However, no further details were provided about the extent of their injuries.
The communities of Mykolaiv, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Richkivka, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Hlukhiv, Shalyhyne, Esman, and Seredyna-Buda were also targeted by Russia throughout the day. The attacks included the use of mortar, artillery, rocket launchers, guided bombs, and drones. Sumy Oblast shares borders with Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod oblasts.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the incursion into Kursk Oblast has helped prevent the occupation of Sumy Oblast and its regional center, the city of Sumy. The situation remains tense as Russian forces continue to target this region.
