The Kremlin revised its timeline for its Kursk Oblast operations to 1 February 2025. It has deployed 40,000 troops, and plans to establish a border buffer zone on Ukrainian territory by 25 Feb.
According to unnamed RBC-Ukraine sources, the Kremlin set new deadlines for military operations in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. The Kremlin chose 1 February 2025 to be the target date to regain full control of the region, after failing to meet its previous October deadline. RBC-Ukraine was told by sources within Ukraine’s Defense Forces that Russian plans include creating a buffer area across the border on Ukrainian territory by 25 Feb.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces began their operation in the Kursk Oblast on August 6. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that on 27 August, 1300 square kilometers of territory and 100+ settlements had been taken under control. However, Russian forces later retook some territory.
The publication reports that Moscow gathered over 40,000 soldiers for the Kursk Oblast operations. RBC-Ukraine reports that while Ukrainian defenses are not yet in ruins, the chances of Ukraine expanding its foothold into the Kursk region remain low.
According to RBC Ukraine sources, Vladimir Putin ordered in August that his military expel Ukrainian forces out of Kursk Oblast before 1 October, while maintaining forces in the key Donbas sectors of eastern Ukraine.
Reports in September indicated that Russia had concentrated 37,000 troops in Kursk Oblast with orders to push Ukrainian forces out by 15 October.
