The British Royal Air Force (RAF), which reported on October 22 that another group of Ukrainian military personnel had completed basic flying training for F-16 jet fighters in the U.K.
According to British Under Secretary of State for Armed Forces Luke Pollard, British instructors have so far trained 200 Ukrainian pilots.
The U.K., along with other allies, has been training Ukrainian pilots in F-16s at a rapid pace due to Kyiv’s urgent need for an air defense against intensifying Russian bombings.
The statement from the RAF read: “The next step will be advanced fast jet training with partner nations and conversion to F-16.”
Pollard and Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.K. Valeriy Zaluzhnyi attended the graduation ceremony.
Zaluzhnyi expressed his gratitude to the U.K. Government for its continued support which “gives Ukraine a chance of winning.”
In May, the first group of Ukrainian pilots completed a full training program in the U.S., and in June, Denmark trained 50 Ukrainian F-16 specialists.
Only 11 F-16 pilots fly in Ukraine today, despite a squadron consisting of 40. Ukraine received its first fourth-generation U.S. jets late in July, a year after Denmark and the Netherlands launched a coalition of fighter jets for Kyiv.
The pace of training was questioned after an F-16, recently delivered, operated by Ukraine’s best pilot, Oleksii Me, crashed on August 26 while defending from a Russian missile and drone attack. Mes, also known as “Moonfish,” died in the crash.
