On Oct. 21, the Basmanny district of Moscow sentenced Ukrainian filmmaker Alexander Rodnyansky to 8 and half years in absence for “spreading false information” about Russian Army.
Rodnyansky, who had worked in Russia for many years, fled the country after Russia’s full scale invasion began in 2022.
The 63-year old Oscar-nominated Producer was accused of reporting the shelling of a Mariupol maternity hospital and other attacks against civilian infrastructure during the war.
Rodnyansky said that the case was a result of his “antiwar posts on Instagram,” and expressed strong disagreement with the ruling.
“No Basmanny Court can stop me from talking loudly,” said he on Telegram.
“The prosecutor stated in her speech that I had characterized the Russian military‘s activities as invasive. And I agree with the prosecution. The rest of the world agrees. “Russia’s war on Ukraine is invasive, despicable and a violation of human rights.”
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has cracked down on dissent. Thousands of his citizens have been arrested and many are now in jail.
Amnesty International estimates that in 2023, “repressive laws” will be used by Russia to “crackdown” on antiwar activists.
