ISW reports that the Russians have advanced near Selydove and could force a Ukrainian retreat, but this gains jeopardizes its main push towards the strategic city Pokrovsk.
The Institute for the Study of War reported on 23 October that Russian forces have made significant advances in and around Selydove over the past few days, but this may hinder their ability to capture Pokrovsk as their primary objective.
Over the past year, Russia has focused on capturing Ukraine-controlled areas in Donetsk Oblast. Major attacks have been repeated near Pokrovsk and Selydove as well as other towns. Russia uses frontal assault tactics to incur heavy losses, but continues to make progress.
According to ISW, geolocated footage of 22 and 23 October confirms that Russian forces have advanced along Skhidna Street and moved northwards along Berehova Street and Zakhysnykiv Street in the eastern part the town towards its center.
ISW reports that additional geolocated footage shows that elements of Russia’s 114th Motorized Rifle Brigade have captured Izmailivka to the southeast of Selydove. The footage also shows Russian advances in the fields north of Tsukuryne and on the northeastern outskirts Novoselydivka.
