The new branch will strengthen cyberspace defense capabilities alongside land, sea air and space domains.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine posted on Facebook on 24th October that Ukraine‘s Armed Forces intend to create Cyber Forces, a separate branch of the military.
The Main Directorate of Intelligence (DNI) and the Security Service are currently the two main Ukrainian players in the cyber domain. After Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Ministry of Digital Transformation created the IT Army of Ukraine. This is a volunteer cyberwarfare group that targets Russian state-run digital infrastructure and online platforms through DDoS and hacking operations.
The General Staff reported that the concept was discussed at a meeting presided by Lieutenant General Anatolii Brylevych, Chief General Staff. The meeting was attended by military representatives, members from the Parliamentary Committee on Security, Defense and Intelligence, and expert.
Participants, according to the General Staff of the United States, examined key provisions for the establishment of Cyber Forces by examining the experience gained by leading nations’ cyber-military units. They examined the experience of Ukraine’s Defense Forces in cyberspace operations, during the ongoing Russian invasion.
