Vakho Kadagidze is the Project Manager of the Tusheti Development Fund. We spoke to him about the efforts being made to this vital industry.
Focusing on Local Heritage
Kadagidze responded that Tushuri Gudi is well-known throughout . The production of Tushuri Gudi cheese has decreased each year because of a decreasing number of farmers. This decline is a threat to not only the cheese but also the cultural identity of this region. The highland regions of Tusheti have breathtaking landscapes, rich traditions and Gudi is a part of this heritage.
Kadagidze emphasized that many farmers still use the traditional methods to ensure the authenticity of the cheese. “These methods have passed down through generations,” said Kadagidze. Yet, due to ongoing challenges, such as nomadism and labor shortages, the future of this artisanal product is in danger. The Tusheti Development Fund was created to address these challenges. It aims to provide farmers the necessary equipment and technology to simplify their activities, and the production of Gudi cheese.
A Competitive Approach
The Tusheti Development Fund organized an open competition to identify local farmers who are most committed to the tradition of Gudi production. Kadagidze recalled that initially, the response was limited. We had to re-engage farmers to keep their interests alive. This proactive approach was fruitful as they received 12 applications.
The selection criteria were strict, and the commission gave priority to experience in Gudi production. Kadagidze said that they wanted to make sure that the farmers selected had not only the skills but also a connection with the land and traditions of Tusheti. Kadagidze also stated that “priority was given to and young farm workers, as they are the ones who need the most encouragement and help.”
Empowering Women & Youth
Kadagidze stressed the importance of women and youth being involved in farming. He said that engaging youth was vital to ensuring the sustainability on the field. “Their success in implementing innovative technologies is vital for the future of Gudi’s cheese production.”
Women’s involvement is equally important. Kadagidze said that women play a crucial role in the production process. Women are often in charge of managing the day-today operations and maintaining the quality of the product.
Looking Ahead
Kadagidze, when discussing the future of Tusheti agriculture, said, “Engaging youth and encouraging them to farm is essential for the preservation and sustainable development of Tushuri Gudi Cheese.” He also noted that current trends indicate a decline in young people’s interest in farming and the importance of supporting projects. He warned that if we don’t act now, we could lose not only the cheese, but also the cultural landscape surrounding it.
The initiatives of the Tusheti Development Fund are designed to encourage young people to engage in traditional farming. The Fund aims to bridge the between traditional and innovative farming through workshops, training sessions and demonstrations.
Enhancing Quality and Safety
Kadagidze said that modernizing the production of cheese would help farmers meet the market’s demands. He believes that better sanitary conditions will improve the quality and safety of the cheese, making it more appealing for consumers. “By adopting new practices, we can make sure that our traditional products meet today’s market expectations,” he said.
The Fund promotes the of two-system machines for milking. “These machines improve not only the efficiency of milking but also the quality of milk,” Kadagidze explained. He said that maintaining high was crucial to compete with other cheese producers of the region.
Adapting to New Technologies
The Tusheti Development Fund introduced innovative technologies such as mobile solar power plants, milking machines and other innovations. Kadagidze said that the pilot projects were designed to be demonstrations. “This year we are testing the equipment seasonally and next summer we plan to have a demonstration day at these farms to show how it works.” This hands on approach is designed for farmers to gain confidence in using new technology.
Kadagidze stressed that this equipment can be used in winter pastures and is portable, addressing the lack electricity in some areas. He said that solar power plants would allow farmers to use machinery in remote areas.
Long-Term Impact
Kadagidze concluded by discussing the broader implications for Gudi cheese producers of improving standards. “It is a product that is more sought after when the standards are improved,” he said. “This leads higher economic returns for the farmers and positively impacts Tusheti’s overall development.”
Kadagidze said that by integrating modern technology into production we streamline processes, reduce costs and benefit the local economy. Gudi cheese is gaining recognition outside of its local roots. The potential for growth will be substantial as it grows. “We envision a world where Tushuri Gudi is celebrated not only in Georgia, but all over the globe,” he concluded.
