The US, Germany, Hungary Slovakia, Belgium, Slovenia and Spain are slowing down Ukraine’s request for an immediate invitation despite Zelenskyy insisting on the necessity of wartime invitations
Politico reports that at least seven NATO member states including the United States, Germany and Belgium are against Ukraine’s request for an immediate invitation to the alliance. Politico, citing anonymous sources, says that Hungary and Slovakia are also hesitant to join the alliance, both of which have pro-Russian governments.
Zelenskyy presented his “victory plans” to Ukraine’s Parliament as well as the EU summit in the past week. The first point called for Ukraine’s invitation into NATO, which he said was essential for lasting peace and deterrent to further Russian aggression. The plan is divided into five public points, three classified annexes and the remaining points, which include: strengthening defense, targeting Russian territory, deterring aggressive behavior with a nonnuclear package and boosting Ukraine’s economic and strategic potential.
Four anonymous US and NATO officials and diplomats told Politico that the “victory plan” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which includes receiving an invitation to NATO during the ongoing conflict with Russia, faces resistance from key members of the alliance.
