Yoon Suk-Yeol, the South Korean president, suggested a more flexible attitude to his country’s support for Ukraine following reports that North Korean troops were being deployed to Russia in a growing alliance between Pyongyang & Moscow.
According to Wpolsce.pl, South Korea will review its policy on sending military aid to other nations, especially Ukraine, after North Korea sent its troops to Russia in order to wage war against Kyiv.
Kirill Budanov is the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. He said that North Korea was sending missiles and soldiers in exchange for nuclear technologies.
On 23 October, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed there was evidence that North Korea had sent military personnel to Russia. However, their exact role is still unclear. The deployment is noteworthy, given that North Korea has the largest standing army in the world with over 1.3 millions active troops.
“I informed President Duda of our intention to increase support for the Ukrainian people based on the initiative of peace and solidarity announced by our government one year ago. We will closely collaborate with Poland in this regard,” said the South Korean leader.
Yoon Suk Yeol, when asked if South Korea intends to send its weapons or soldiers to Ukraine, noted that South Korea has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine until now but acknowledged that the “situation has changed” because of North Korea’s close collaboration with Russia.
“We are almost certain North Korea is sending special forces to Russia. We will respond based on North Korea’s actions if they are on the frontlines in Ukraine. We have maintained the principle of not directly providing lethal weapons. However, this may change depending on North Korean actions,” said YoonSuk Yeol.
During the conference he stressed that he and President Duda both condemned North Korea’s illegal military cooperation with Russia.
Yoon Suk Yeol said that the deployment of North Korean forces to Russia violates both the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution. He called it a provocative act that threatens the security of not only the Korean Peninsula, but also Europe and all of the world.
