BBC Ukraine reported on October 24, citing anonymous source, that President Volodymyr Zelensky does not plan to sign a law abolishing seasonal daylight savings time in Ukraine.
On July 16, the Ukrainian Parliament passed a bill that aims to cancel daylight savings time.
This means that Ukrainians will set their clocks one hour back for the last time in 2024 on October 27th, and they will not return to summer time in spring of next year.
The bill, which was signed by Ruslan Stefanchuk as the speaker of the parliamentary, was sent to Zelensky, but it remains unsigned.
BBC sources confirmed that the bill would not be signed by the president’s office and the parliamentary presidency faction.
Stefanchuk’s bill will not be vetoed, but it will not be implemented. According to reports, the government calculated that “several billion” hryvnias were lost as a result of the change.
Many countries in Europe and North America have adopted daylight savings time to take advantage of the longer daylight hours in summer. The clock is moved forward by an hour in the spring, and then set back in the autumn.
In 2018, 84% of respondents to a poll in the EU were in favor of the practice’s abolition. The European Parliament voted to end the system in 2021, but no final decision was made and the practice continues in many parts of Europe.
In spite of that, Ukrainian lawmakers portrayed the change as a move towards EU integration.
The bill to end daylight saving time was passed by the Ukrainian Parliament on July 16. The Ukrainians will set their clocks one hour back for the last time in October 2024. They will not return to summer time in the spring of 2025.
