The shortage of zinc is expected to affect global supply forecasts by 2025. These projections are likely overstated.
Unless Ozernoye makes a significant contribution, it is expected that the ongoing shortage of Zinc Concentrate – an essential raw material used to produce zinc metal for galvanizing steel – will continue. Zinc prices have already reached a 20-month peak due to this supply crunch. Ozernoye told Reuters that it plans to continue producing zinc concentrate at levels similar to its previous targets despite the challenges.
Ozernoye began production in September and aims to reach full capacity in 2025, with an annual output equivalent to 320,000 metric tonnes of zinc in concentrated form, or 2.5% of global mined zinc supplies projected for next year. This is according to the International Lead & Zinc Study Group.
The ILZSG forecasted an increase of 8.9% in zinc supply outside China by 2025, taking into account Ozernoye’s ramp-up. Sources indicate that Ozernoye is yet to produce any material because of difficulties replacing the components required to process ore to concentrate, which were damaged by a fire in Nov. 2023.
Due to U.S. Sanctions imposed following the fire, these components, originally supplied to Ozernoye by are no longer available. Glencore, a company that uses similar equipment for its Australian operations confirmed it would comply with the sanctions, but declined to elaborate further.
