The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported that Ukrainian forces destroyed radar equipment of a Buk M2 air defense system, and struck a Buk M3 system over night on October 25 in the occupied Luhansk Oblast.
The attack was carried by Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces as well as other military units. The General Staff did no elaborate on possible other damages besides the destroyed guidance system.
The statement stated that the Russian targets were “hit several dozens of kilometers beyond the front line.”
Buk is the name of a family self-propelled medium-range air defence systems developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s. The Buk-M2 is a modernized version, capable of shooting down targets such as tactical ballistic missiles from a distance of 50 and 65 kilometers (30 and 40 miles).
In the early months of Donbas War, Russian proxy forces used a Buk-missile to shoot down MH17 Malaysian Airlines over Donetsk Oblast in July 2014.
The military reported that Ukraine destroyed a Buk M3 system over night on October 21, 2010.
In its morning report of October 25, the General Staff stated that Ukrainian forces destroyed 982 Russian antiaircraft systems during the full-scale conflict.
The radar guidance system for a Buk M2 system was reportedly destroyed in the attack by Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces.
The incident occurred near Grozny. It is the capital of Russia’s North Caucasus republic with a majority of Muslims, ruled by Putin ally Ramzan Kadyrov.
The Air Force reported that Ukrainian forces shot down 36 of the 63 Shahed drones and unidentified drones that Russia launched overnight. Sixteen drones were also “lost”, it added.
The WSJ reported that such assistance shows just how far Russian President Vladimir Putin will go to undermine Western economic and political orders.
Former and current Europeans, Americans, and Russian officials have told the WSJ they had conversations with Putin and other senior Kremlin officials as far back as late 2022.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, said that Ukraine’s economy and social protection, as well as “the issue” of justice, need to be strengthened.
This includes 1,630 casualties that Russian forces have suffered in the last day.
In a speech to foreign journalists, Vladimir Putin of Russia appeared to acknowledge in an indirect manner the reports that North Korean troops were in Russia on October 24. He referred to a mutual defense clause in the newly signed security agreement between Russia and North Korea.
Reuters reported that Western sanctions against Russia’s Ozernoye Zinc Mine have left the company unable to replace the key equipment required to boost production.

The bill to end daylight saving time was passed by the Ukrainian Parliament on July 16. The Ukrainians will set their clocks one hour back for the last time in October 2024. They will not return to summer time in the spring of 2025.
