Ukraine’s military intelligence agency reported that Russia intends to assign one interpreter for every 30 North Koreans soldiers to improve coordination with Russian troops in the battlefield. The report was based on an intercepted communication between service members of a Russian Brigade in Kursk Oblast.
According to military intelligence, North Korea has sent more than 12,000 troops, including 500 officers, three generals and three division commanders, to Russia to take part in the war against Ukraine. On Oct. 23, the first sightings were made of North Korean soldiers at a Russian base.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Russia, said that Moscow plans to send its first North Korean soldiers into a combat zone between October 27 and 28.
According to HUR, in intercepted conversations the Russian military refers the North Korean soldiers to “K Battalion.”
Three Russian soldiers, in addition to an interpreter will be assigned for every group of thirty North Korean fighters. The Russian army has doubts about the feasibility of this plan.
North Korea denied reports that its troops were in Russia. A Kremlin spokeswoman gave a vague response.
A military intelligence source informed the Kyiv independent on October 21 that Russian authorities had detained 18 North Korean troops who abandoned their positions within the Kursk Oblast. Video footage has also been released, allegedly showing North Korean soldiers at a Russian training camp.
On October 22, South Korean media reported that Pyongyang has dispatched pilots who can fly Russian warplanes in order to join the conflict. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that South Korea was also considering sending personnel to Ukraine in order to monitor North Korean forces.
