Salome , President of Georgian Dream, said at a recent press conference that the elections were of existential significance.
The President responded to the questions “If the opposition wins, how will relations be balanced between Russia and West?” and “Will be imposed on Russia?” by saying, “Georgia has never balanced its attitude towards Russia and West.”
“Georgia has joined the sanctions on the same level as Moldova. There are, however, some subtle differences. “This isn’t a problem,” she said. “Georgia never tried to balance their relationships between Russia and Western. In the last 30 years, the population has not wavered from its course. This path will prevail, because there is no viable alternate.”
Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament, announced on October 7 that the ruling Georgian Dream Party would initiate a second round of impeachment procedures against President Salome Zurabishvili.
Speaker Papuashvili remarked after the Constitutional found that the President had violated the Constitution of Georgia that it was “radical opposition” who provided her “impunity” which protected her from being impeached. He said that, despite this security, she continued disregarding the Constitution. She made foreign trips to France, Germany and Belgium without obtaining the necessary authorization.
Georgian Dream, the ruling party, filed a constitutional case with the Constitutional Court of Georgia on October 21 initiating impeachment procedures against President Salome Zurabishvili. The motion was approved earlier by the Procedural Affairs Committee. It was signed by 81 MPs.
The Constitutional Court has one month to review the matter, and if it is approved, the Parliament must vote on the impeachment in two weeks after receiving the report of the court. To remove the President, a two-thirds vote (100 ) is required.
