The NATO Summit in Vilnius was attended by the Heads of State and Governments of NATO. They issued a Communique focusing on key issues and challenges that face the Alliance.
In relation to Georgia, the Communique reaffirms the Allies commitment to the 2008 Bucharest Summit Decision stating that Georgia would become a member with the Membership Action Plan being an integral part of the Process; the Allies reaffirm the Allies commitment to all elements of this decision.
The Alliance reiterates their support for the territorial integrity and sovereign rights of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders and “stands firmly” in their support for “Georgia’s right to decide its own future and its foreign policy course without outside interference.”
Allies urge Russia to “reverse” its recognition of the Abkhazia region and South Ossetia region of Georgia and to stop militarizing these regions. They also call on Russia to stop human rights abuses and violations, including arbitrary arrests and harassment of Georgian citizens.
Allies say: “We are very appreciative of Georgia’s substantial contribution to NATO operations. This shows its commitment and ability to contribute to Euro-Atlantic Security.”
They are also committed to “making full use of the NATO Georgia Commission and the Annual National Programme in order to deepen the political dialogue and practical co-operation with Georgia.”
The Communique congratulates Georgia on the progress it has made in implementing its Substantial NATO-Georgia Package.
Allies also say that Georgia must make progress on reforms including key democratic reforms and make the most of the ANP to achieve its Euro-Atlantic ambitions.
