There are many updates today from the Lyman Oblast. In a decisive decision, the Ukrainian command redeployed its elite forces to stabilize the area near Nevske and counter a significant Russian push. This quick maneuver allowed Ukraine to counterattack successfully, allowing it to regain control over key positions and blunt Russian advances toward the village Torske.
Lyman is an important hub for Russia’ Donbas ambitions
Recent developments in the Lyman-direction have shown a significant intensification of Russian effort, particularly focused on the Torske area. The Russian strategic goal remains clear: crossing Zherebets River in order to capture Lyman, an important railway and logistic hub.
Lyman is a key objective for Russia, as it will be necessary to advance further towards Sloviansk and Kramatorsk – the two major Ukrainian cities in the Donbas area. Since abandoning Kharkiv’s offensive in Russia has made gaining full control of Donbas, Donetsk Luhansk Oblasts, its primary political and military goal.
Russia’s options for capturing Lyman
Looking at the topographic map we can see that there are only two main vectors available for to advance toward Lyman. The dense woodland in the southern area of the Serebryanskyi Forest basically blocks the southern area, making mechanized advancements near impossible.
The first viable route is a route that runs from Torske to Zarichne. This route avoids large water bodies and elevated terrain, but runs dangerously close the northern edge of the forest. The second option involves crossing Zherebets River between Terny and Yampolivka. This route is initially difficult due to the wide water areas, and the elevated terrain beyond the river. However, if this route is successful it will allow you to approach Lyman from a higher position.
Russian tactical shift in Nevske operation
In any event, Russian forces have adopted an extensive approach, realizing that success at Terny or Yampolivka would significantly improve their position in the tactical area near Torske. This strategy has also increased the bombardment, especially with FAB bombs concentrating around Terny. After a series of failed frontal attacks near Terny, Yampolivka and other towns, Russian forces re-evaluated their strategy, launching an unexpected attack further in order to capture the village Nevske.
Nevske is located in the lowlands, making it difficult to amass forces for a significant southern push. However, its capture served a dual purpose: disrupting Ukrainian logistical supply for the Ukrainian bridgehead while diverting Ukrainian resources from sectors in south. In response to this situation, the Ukrainian command displayed a tactical understanding. The Ukrainian command responded to this situation with a tactical understanding.
Ukraine’s swift reaction stops Russian momentum
Recent first-person footage of this operation revealed intense battles and dramatic scenes, as dismounted their M113 armored personnel carrier and stormed Russian position in the forest and in Nevske village.
The footage also highlights the extensive use by of drones to command and direct their assaults. This demonstrates the integration of technology into tactical operations. A shocking incident occurred during a close quarters encounter in a Nevske Building: Ukrainian soldiers, while taking a short rest, detected the enemy presence only meters away. This led to a fierce firefight, where their superior response time proved decisive.
The successful undermining by Ukrainian forces of Russian operations near Torske has allowed them to concentrate their resources more effectively on the Russian attacks. Geolocated footage taken by drone operators of the 60th Mechanized Brigade in Nevske showed successful against Russian tank crews, and the 37th Motorized Rifle Regiment. These precision drone strikes east of Torske village showed the continued effectiveness of Ukrainian drone warfare.
The rapid deployment by the Ukrainian command of elite units such as the 3rd Assault Brigade, from their positions in the north, proved decisive. This quick action allowed a lightning counterattack to stabilize the situation and reclaim significant portions of Nevske. This success allowed Ukrainian forces to concentrate more effectively in the southern sector on repelling Russian advances toward Torske.
This recent series shows the Ukrainian military’s ability quickly to read and react tactical situations. Elite units were deployed precisely where they were needed, while maintaining effective coordination between drones and artillery across multiple sectors. The Russian diversion attempt at Nevske was initially successful but ultimately failed to achieve the Russian strategic objectives because of the swift and decisive Ukrainian reaction.
