Georgia’s Central Election Commission closed a polling place in the southern city Marneuli on Oct. 26, after video footage was released of ballot stuffing at the parliamentary elections.
Georgian media outlet SOVA reported that the Interior Ministry has also opened an investigation into this incident.
The investigation was launched under Article 164 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which deals with “falsifications of elections.” This includes the deliberate falsifications of election documents, such as voter lists, ballots, registration records, and control sheets.
Nino Lomjaria is a former Georgian ombudswoman and lawyer who reported earlier that day, Oct. 26, that an election monitor was attacked as he filmed a ballot box getting stuffed.
Giorgi Kalandarishvili called the video “disturbing” and said, “if confirmed, election administration will not permit such managed or manipulative incident to undermine the many month’s effort we have put in towards election day.”
On October 26, Georgia will hold parliamentary elections that will determine whether the Moscow-friendly Georgian Dream Party will remain in power.
