The bill, which envisions the elimination of budget funding for parties that boycott and the termination free airtime was adopted by the Parliament in its first reading.
Georgian Dream‘s majority of 84 votes approved the amendments made to the Law on Political Unions of Citizens. They also voted to change the electoral legislation and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament.
According to one of the authors of the project, the opposition parties will be receiving budget funding over the next six-month period.
“A party whose mandates in parliament will be suspended or whose involvement in parliamentary work will be suspended, will have their state funding canceled or suspend for a full year.” The MPs of these parties will also not receive salaries, and they will be denied the right to use free media during municipal and parliamentary election,” announced Irakli Kobakhidze, the majority leader in the Parliament.
For the record, a number of opposition parties have addressed parliament in an official manner to stop the status change for their MPs. They refuse to enter Parliament of the 10th convocation claiming that the incumbent has rigged election results.
