US to arm Taiwanese with NASAMS air defence systems that were tested in Ukraine

The United States has approved an arms sale of up to $2 billion to . This includes the NASAMS air defence system, which has been highly effective in . The package includes 3 NASAMS units, 123 AMRAAM ER missiles and radar systems.
This move is in response to ‘s ongoing activities around Taiwan which views as a breakaway region. The DSCA claims that the sale will improve Taiwan’s air defence capabilities and promote regional cooperation with the US, while maintaining the current balance of military power in the region.
The Security Cooperation Agency, a agency that promotes strategic cooperation, stated: “The proposed sale would help Taiwan improve its capability to meet present and future threats.”
NASAMS’s 25-mile range has shown remarkable effectiveness against aircraft and cruise missiles. Its combat performance has been particularly notable, with US Defense Sec. reporting that the US had intercepted Russian missiles 100% of the time as of November 2022.
The deal is now awaiting Congressional approval.
