In a video message made during a rally on Freedom Square, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko urged the currently imprisoned Mikheil Sakaashvili to end his hunger strike. Tymoshenko stated that she believes Mikheil should be released from jail. “Dear Misha: I understand the reasons that led you to decide to go on a hunger strike. But your country needs you healthy and strong. I also ask his supporters to tell him to stop the strike. This is vital for his life and your joint struggle. Mikheil Saakashvili has to be released,” Tymoshenko stated. She added that, despite holding different positions, she is certain that Saakashvili supports a strong democratic Ukraine. She added that the former president is also fighting for a democratic and free Georgia. It is unfair to deny a person their freedom because of political views and struggles. “Mikheil has a right that is indisputable, unconditional and inviolable to be free and in his homeland, not in prison,” Tymoshenko concluded. Today, the United National Movement held a rally for Mikheil Saakashvili and demanded his release from prison. The rally was attended by citizens from Tbilisi as well as other regions of Georgia. The demonstration on Freedom Square took place in a calm and peaceful environment. There were no incidents or confrontations with law enforcement. Politicians and journalists thanked the audience for their presence. The demonstrators chanted, “Misha! Misha!” in support of Saakashvili.Nika Meelia, UNM Chairman, said at the rally that the main battle lies ahead and that they should protect every vote during the second local elections scheduled for 30 October.
