Opposition parties refuses to acknowledge results, plans protests and cites systematic violations as well as unprecedented pressure on voters.
According to Georgia’s Central Election Commission, the pro-Russian ruling Georgian Dream Party has claimed victory at the 26 October parliamentary election, having secured more than 54% votes. The official results are a significant departure from the pre-election polls as well as opposition exit polls.
The ruling Georgian Dream Party is trying to cement the pro-Russian policy of the country, which it has pursued ever since it came into power. The EU has suspended contact with Georgia after the government adopted Russian-style laws on “foreign agents”, “family values”, and “foreign agents”. This has halted the country’s path towards EU membership.
According to polls conducted before the election, Georgian Dream would receive 35% of the votes, and the combined pro-European parties were expected to secure a majority in parliament. The polls showed that:
* Coalition for Change: 19%
* Unity (National Movement Agmashenebeli Strategy, European Georgia) : 16%
* Strong Georgia (Lelo For the People Freedom Square, Citizens, Freedom Square): 9%
* Gakharia: For Georgia 8%
* Girchi (Iago Khvichia): 3%
* Other Parties: 10%
