In a debate with the incumbent president on October 27, Alexandr Stoianoglo, a candidate for the Moldovan presidency, claimed that he would continue to support Ukraine. This statement was dismissed by Maia Sandu.
Stoianoglo will face pro EU Sandu, who is supported by the pro Russian Party of Socialists in a runoff presidential vote on November 3. Stoianoglo and Sandu, who won the first round of voting on October 20, respectively, with 25,95% and 42.49 % each, will face off in a run-off presidential vote on Nov. 3.
Stoianoglo replied that he “would establish good relations with all partners in development” when Sandu asked him how he planned to develop relations with Ukraine.
The presidential candidate said that “now, there are only military statements.”
“Do you really believe what you say?” Sandu replied, “In Kyiv they know that you are Moscow’s man.”
According to the incumbent President, Stoianoglo has the support of Igor Dodon. Dodon was Moldova’s pro Russian head of state from 2016 to 2020, but he is currently facing corruption and treason allegations.
Moldovan authorities accused Moscow, and pro-Russian Ilan Shor, of buying votes in order to influence the elections against Sandu as well as the parallel referendum on EU Membership.
The non-binding constitutional referendum to enshrine Chisinau’s EU aspirations passed with a razor thin margin of only 50.35 %, a result that was significantly lower than expected.
Sandu has supported Ukraine through the entire war and led her country in a pro-EU direction, launching accession negotiations earlier this year.
Stoianoglo, Moldova’s former prosecutor-general, hailing from Gagauzia (a region largely pro Russian), presented himself as a new candidate who could unite the opposition. Sandu and other observers claimed that Moscow was using his candidacy to present a candidate more acceptable than Dodon.
