BBC reports that a review by the European Medicines Agency concluded that the AstraZeneca COVID–19 vaccination is “safe and efficacious” and “its benefits far outweigh its risks”.
The European Medicines Agency conducted a study on the vaccine following reports that blood clots were linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine.
BBC reports that the EMA concluded the vaccine “was not associated” with a higher risk of clots. However, it said it would continue to “study the possibility of such a link.”
Emer Cooke is the Executive Director of the EMA. She said that the benefits of the vaccine in protecting people against COVID-19 outweighed the risks. “The vaccine does not increase the risk of thrombotic or blood clot events”.
She added that EMA could not rule out a link between the vaccine and a small number of rare and uncommon but very serious clotting disorder cases. Additional investigations are underway.”
The World Health Organization called on countries today to continue using AstraZeneca and said that it will release the results of their own study into AstraZeneca’s safety on Friday.
