“After the failed project of a ‘technical Government’, it’s apparent that the radicals are concentrating on a ‘technical Parliament‘, which is a dangerous game to the constitutional order and an attempt to delegitimize elected legislators,” Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said in a briefing held Tuesday.
Papuashvili said that the European Commission’s 12 priority points are being actively worked on by the parliament. The parliament has set up a number of commissions, and will introduce amendments within the specified timeframe in regards to parliamentary oversight, election reform, equality for women, and the Georgian judiciary’s proactive use of ECHR.
“Members from the ruling Georgian Dream, Girchi, European Socialists Citizens and For Georgia Parties are working together in a group to oppose the United National Movement (GD), Lelo and Strategy Aghmashenebeli who reject this format despite being urged by the European Parliament delegation that visited Georgia recently. The opposition is planning to resume street protests next month, with the aim of deepening political polarization.
Shalva Papuashvili said that “international political actors and the civil sector must clearly evaluate the move to delegitimize parliament so as not to undermine European integration and radical opposition,”
