Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Senate of the Kingdom of Spain, met with the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee. During the meeting, the close co-operation between Georgia and Spain was positively evaluated.
The Speaker expressed gratitude to Spain for its support of the territorial integrity and European ambitions of Georgia.
“We are grateful for the support and assistance of Spain, both in terms of facilitating our territorial integrity as well as the non-recognition policies. Spain’s support is not only expressed in words, but also in actions by its participation in the EU Monitoring Mission,” said Speaker Papuashvili. He went on to discuss Georgia’s progress towards compliance with EU recommendations.
Antonio Gutierrez Limones, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee noted that the Spanish Delegation consists of members from various political groups and that all of them strongly supported EU candidacy for Georgia.
“When Spain is given the EU presidency in 2023’s second half, this will serve as a trigger to grant the EU candidacy for Georgia, which is what the President of Senate of the Kingdom of Spain wants. Gutierrez Limones said that Georgia is a part Europe.
