President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the potential role of Indian PM Narendra Modi as a mediator in peace talks to end the war in Ukraine.
“Modi is PM of a very large country in terms of population, influence, and impact. A country of this size cannot say that it is only interested in the end to the war. It is all interested. PM Modi has the power to influence the outcome of the Ukraine conflict. This is his huge value in any conflict. Zelensky told the Times of India on October 28 that India is of great value.
The president expressed optimism that negotiations could take place in India. “Undoubtedly, it can be held in India… and PM Modi is capable of doing that… But I think we should prepare ourselves… And only according to our format… because the war is on our land… We have the platform called the peace summit.”
The winter is approaching, and the country faces many challenges. These include pressure from Russian advances in Donetsk Oblast, and uncertainty surrounding U.S. backing during upcoming presidential elections. Zelensky warned a Trump win could threaten vital military aid to Kyiv.
Zelensky stressed the importance of Ukraine’s energy system and reiterated that NATO membership and the recently revealed Victory Plan are intended to strengthen Ukraine’s position in future negotiations. “The Victory Plan” is not a negotiation topic or a bargaining tool. What we ask for is an invitation from NATO so that nobody can change their mind in the future.
Zelensky urged Modi, too, to take concrete action rather than just rhetoric. He said that India’s influence would be crucial in addressing issues like the return of Ukrainian deported children to Russia. “You can force Putin into bringing back Ukrainian children… Let Modi bring at least 1,000 Ukrainian Children back.”
India, a historical ally of Russia has maintained close economic and diplomatic relations with Moscow since February 20, 2022. Bilateral trade reached a record high in 2023.
