On October 28, EU Ministers issued a joint statement regarding the Parliamentary Elections in Georgia. They expressed their deep concern over the current situation in Georgia, and demanded an impartial investigation of complaints about violations.
The Ministers note that international observers have reported violations both during the election campaign and on election day. They “condemn any violation of international standards for free and fair election.” They also state that they “demand an impartial investigation of complaints and remedies of the violations established.” “
The Ministers say: “We stand by the side of Georgians in this difficult period” and that “it is important that protests, and in particular government reactions to them, remain peaceful.”
EU Ministers have stressed that “violations of electoral integrity are not compatible with the standards expected of a candidate for the European Union.” They are a betrayal to the legitimate European aspiration of the Georgians.
They stress that “upholding rule of law and fair and free elections is integral to any progress in Georgia’s EU pathway.”
The Ministers also criticize Prime minister Orban’s premature trip to Georgia and emphasize: “He doesn’t speak on behalf the EU.”
