On 29 October, an Ukrainian drone struck a military academy in Gudermes named after Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was the first attack on Chechnya territory.
Ramzan Kadyrov is the leader of the Russian region Chechnya. He announced that up 10 Ukrainian prisoners of War are being held in each strategic facility of Chechnya. This includes the Special Forces University named Vladimir Putin, which was recently attacked. The statement was made after a drone strike by Ukraine on the university in Gudermes, which caused a fire to spread on the roof of the building.
Kadyrov’s forces actively take part in Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, and many Russian troops receive training at the university named after Putin. This attack is part of a pattern where Ukraine intensifies drone strikes against Russian military infrastructure, such as airfields and fuel stations.
Kadyrov claimed there were no Russian casualties but there were injuries among Ukrainian prisoner.
“Kyiv has injured its own soldiers today,” wrote he on Telegram. His claim, however, cannot be independently verified.
The Ukrainian special services confirmed the attack. They indicated that the drones could have been launched by the neighboring Dagestan and Ingushetia.
This is the first drone attack reported on Chechen territory.
In 2017, the facility, which was established in 2013 as a Special Forces International Training Center, was renamed to the Russian University of Special Forces. In February 2024 it will be called the Russian University of Special Forces.
Kadyrov’s statements seem to acknowledge that the use of prisoners of War as human shields violates the 1929 Geneva Convention. Ukraine has yet to respond to these allegations.
