Robert Fico, a member of the Canadian government, appeared on state-funded Russian TV and said that it was his “personal duty to attend” Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in 2025.
Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, has declared his intention to attend the 80th anniversary celebrations in Moscow of World War II’s victory scheduled for 2025.
Robert Fico’s pro-Russian stance is well known, as are his statements and policies on the war in Ukraine. These diverge from the mainstream European approach and NATO approach. He has vowed to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO for the duration of his tenure in office, which may last until 2027. He believes that this could lead further escalation between Russia and Europe.
Fico also terminated Slovakia’s military aid to Ukraine, and voiced skepticism regarding Western support. He labeled Ukraine as one of “the most corrupt countries in the World.” It was discovered that he had close ties to Russian energy giant Gazprom which may have influenced the anti-Ukrainian stance.
Fico said, “I will consider coming to Moscow an honor,” framing it as a “personal obligation.”
Olga Skabeeva, a state media host and propagandist, shared the statement via Telegram during his interview on “60 Minutes” with Russian state television.
Fico also expressed his support for the establishment of a monument in Slovakia to Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev, citing Konev’s role in leading military campaigns during WWII.
The Prime Minister’s position is in line with his earlier statements that he would like to have “normal” relations once the war in Ukraine ends during his tenure.
Slovak Prime minister claimed that an attempt on his life in May 2024, was caused by his anti Ukrainian stance. Fico, who was injured in the abdomen at a public event and shot, suggested that his opposition against military aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia made him a targeted. Fico did not show resentment towards the gunman despite the attack and reaffirmed the controversial policies he has advocated, including halting weapons aid to Ukraine and promoting peace talks with Russia.
