Mykhailo Federorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, announced on Nov. 1 that Ukraine will launch a 5G Pilot Project in three cities to test its compatibility with military technologies.
5G, or the fifth-generation cellular technology, offers much faster data transmission speeds than its predecessor 4G.
Fedorov said that the Ukrainian government amended the resolution regarding the use of radio frequency, which will allow the country to test the 5G technology.
He said that the two-year program will cover two stages and three cities. The National Cybersecurity Coordination Center and the Ukrainian State Center for Radio Frequencies are partnering to test if 5G equipment interferes or not with military networks.
Fedorov stated that 5G can transmit data 10 times faster than the 4G standard, which creates new opportunities to exchange large amounts of data at ultra-high speed.
“This is a key step towards the full launch 5G in Ukraine which we plan to finish by 2030.”
Fedorov said that the launch of 5G would provide operators with more flexibility and ensure high-quality telecommunications, despite the pressures from Russia’s full scale war.
Fedorov has not identified the three cities who will participate in the pilot program.
