The Hill reported that two U.S. legislators have made a bipartisan request to President Joe Biden, asking him to allow Poland the opportunity to shoot down Russian missiles above the skies of Ukraine.
The news outlet received a letter from Republican Joe Wilson, and Steve Cohen, chair and ranking member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission.
“Despite Russia’s continued escalation of hybrid warfare — airspace violation, attacks on critical infrastructure and efforts to destabilize democracy institutions — we have hesitant to confront these threats, allowing Russia wage a war against our alliance with minimal consequences,” said the group.
“In this context the request from Poland to intercept and neutralize rockets over Ukraine as a support for Ukraine and a safety measure to the frontline NATO’s borders is both urgent and necessary.”
In June, a signed security agreement between Poland and Ukraine laid out the possibility that Warsaw could shoot down Russian missiles headed toward Poland via Ukraine.
While Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish Foreign Minister, said that the issue was still being discussed at the time, Wladyslaw KOSINIAK-KAMYSZ explained that all NATO member states would have to agree on this decision before it could be taken.
Then-NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg was against the move and insisted that the alliance “will never be involved in this war.”
Mark Rutte is Stoltenberg’s successor. He has not yet addressed the issue publicly.
Sikorski returned to the issue in September, when he declared that he was in favour of shooting down Russian missiles over Poland and warned of a possible nuclear disaster
He said that Poland has the legal authority to shoot down any Russian missiles or drones that violate Polish airspace.
“Russia cannot…dictate how we defend ourselves.” Sikorski said, “We have both a constitutional and recognized in international laws to defend our airspace.”
He warned that a Russian rocket could hit a Ukrainian nucleopower plant, referring to the Chornobyl catastrophe of 1986 which leaked radiation throughout Ukraine and Belarus. A similar nuclear catastrophe could also affect Poland.
He said: “I think that we should help Ukraine protect its nuclear power plant against such stray Russian rockets.”
Authorities said that the attack destroyed the entrance from the first to fifth floors of a nine-story building.
