Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, said that Kyiv was preparing a document on bilateral cooperation with Budapest to “clear up misunderstandings” on a number of issues between the two countries.
Zelensky stated that the document was likely to cover issues related to national minorities and security cooperation.
“The least that we ask from Hungary is that it does not block Ukraine’s NATO invitation. Zelensky told community leaders in western Ukraine, “Don’t support us, don’t vote for us and don’t block.”
The relations between Kyiv & Budapest have continued to deteriorate as Hungary, under the strongman leader Viktor Orban has repeatedly blocked aid for Kyiv. He also pushed for negotiations with Moscow and repeated Kremlin talking-points.
Orban called Ukraine’s five point victory plan, including NATO membership at the top of the list, “more than frightening” on Oct. 17. Orban, in a post on socia media, urged the EU‘s strategy towards the war in Ukraine to be changed and reiterated his calls for “a truce and peace talks.”
Zelensky stated that the document was being prepared would contain many things to clarify misunderstandings and to answer challenges in the present, future and past.
Zelensky said that resolving issues relating to national minorities must be addressed “so as to avoid any issues between our states.”
Budapest has repeatedly accused Kyiv, which denies the charge, of discriminating against Hungarians who live in southwest Ukraine.
In recent months, the two countries have sought to improve their relations on this issue.
According to European Pravda, Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha stated on Sept. 30, after talks with his Hungarian equivalent Peter Szijjarto at Budapest, that both sides saw “positive dynamics” when it comes to resolving national minorities issues.
The Ukrainian parliament approved in September 2023 changes to the national minorities laws, which was among the seven steps recommended by European Commission for Ukraine’s entry into the European Union in June 2022. The changes were signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in November.
