A new British-German defence initiative aims to provide Ukraine upgraded Sea King helicopters with modern weapons systems.
According to an official UK Government statement, the British government announced that it would be working with Germany on a joint project to upgrade Ukraine’s Sea King helicopters with modern missiles.
The British government reported that “the countries would provide Ukraine with new offensive capability in the short-term.” “
The UK has not specified how many helicopters or what types of systems will be transferred.
The cooperation goes beyond helicopter upgrades. The UK plans to increase its support for the armored coalition led by Germany, Poland and Latvia, while Germany will contribute towards the drone coalition led under Latvian and British leadership.
Sea King, an anti-submarine helicopter with twin engines, has been in use since 1963. Britain produced 41 units in six variations.
In January 2023, the UK delivered its first Sea King to Ukraine. Germany announced the transfer of six more units in January 2020.
This development comes amid a number of other defense cooperation initiatives.
