Ukraine and South Korea agreed to intensify their contacts at all levels as a response to the involvement by North Korean troops alongside Russia in the war. Militarnyi reports that Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, spoke with South Korean President Yoon-Suk Yeol after a phone call.
North Korea has provided with approximately 2,000,000 artillery rounds and at least 11000 ammunition containers since 2023, during the ongoing RussoUkrainian War. South Korea’s intelligence reports also claim that Pyongyang sent ,000 troops to Russia and plans to send 10,000 by December. Zelenskyy & Yeol agreed during their recent phone call to develop a plan of action and a list countermeasures to respond to the escalation. They also agreed to involve joint partners in the cooperation.
As part of the agreement, Ukraine will soon exchange delegations with South Korea to coordinate future actions.
Unnamed South Korean official from the presidential office said that the Ukrainian side would need a few days to appoint an ambassador and finalize plans the visit and the negotiations in South Korea.
According to Yonhap, an official revealed that South Korea was considering sending a to monitor North Korean activities on the front line in Ukraine.
It is important to assess the security implications for South Korea. Pyongyang could acquire new military technology from Russia in exchange of deploying its troops and acquiring modern combat tactics.
The publication stated that many South Koreans believe that the involvement by North Korean troops in Russia’s war against Ukraine is a “direct threat” to the country. When asked if South Korea was considering providing Ukraine with 155mm shells, the official clarified there had been no request from the Ukrainian side.
The official said that while the issue of weapons supply to Ukraine was not currently being discussed, defensive armaments would be given priority consideration.
