Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, said on November 2 that Russia had launched over 2,000 Shahed drones against Ukraine in October. He also urged Western allies to impose more sanctions on the suppliers of components used by Russian drones. Russia continues to avoid sanctions using sanctions evasion network and shell companies. Russia is also helped in its efforts to evade sanctions by its allies including China, Iran, North Korea, and others. Zelensky stated in his evening speech that “this volume of ‘Shahed” drones represents over 170,000 parts that should have been prevented from reaching Russia.” “Microchips are vital for this terror. Microcontrollers, processors and other parts, too, are also essential. Zelensky said, “All of these parts are supplied to Russia by companies in China, Europe and America, a multitude of small, but significant contributions to Russia’s ongoing terror.” Zelensky, in his evening speech, called for more effective and expansive sanctions against companies who deliver components to Russia. “Such schemes allow Russia to strengthen regimes in Iran, North Korea and elsewhere. This is a global problem that can only be solved by a coordinated global effort. The U.S. imposed a fine of $500,000 on GlobalFoundries on Nov. 1 for shipping chips to an affiliate of a sanctioned Chinese chipmaker SMIC without authorization. Reuters reported. Russia has launched tens and thousands of cheap, but effective, Iranian-designed Shahed type drones against Ukraine.
