Reuters: Ukraine deploys dozens of AI systems that will help its drones to hit targets

While Russian jamming equipment creates shield that renders traditional drones ineffective, Ukraine’s AI-enabled robots are learning how to find gaps in electronic defenses which operators cannot penetrate.
A senior told Reuters that Ukraine uses dozens of AI-augmented drones in the to reach battlefield targets without piloting. This is a new detail about the race to harness automation against Russia.
The introduction of AI-enabled, autonomous drones into Ukraine marks a turning point in modern warfare. The technological innovations in the are not only tactical innovations, but they can be a game-changer for Ukraine’s defence capabilities and the evolution of military technologies.
The outlet noted that using artificial intelligence allowed cheap drones with explosives to spot their targets or fly to them in areas protected by signal jamming. This has reduced the effectiveness and efficiency of manually operated drones.
The shift to AI, especially in target finding, flight control and other areas, is an important front in the technology race which has developed since Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine in February 2022.
