A senior official told Reuters that Ukraine uses dozens of AI-augmented drones made in the country to reach battlefield targets without piloting. This is a new detail about the race to harness automation against Russia.

The news outlet noted that systems using artificial intelligence allowed cheap drones with explosives to spot their targets or fly to them in areas protected by signal jamming. This has reduced the effectiveness and efficiency of manually operated drones.
The shift to AI, especially in drone target finding, flight control and other areas, is an important front in the technology race which has developed since Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine in February 2022.
