Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish Foreign Minister, said that Poland could offer a loan to Ukraine if they wanted to buy its arms. This was in response to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s remarks about Poland’s failure of delivering MiG fighter planes to Ukraine, as agreed previously, Polsat reported.
Ukraine’s Air Force is largely outgunned, as it lacks planes and missiles that can counter Russian air attacks. This includes guided air bombs.
According to Sikorski the government under Donald Tusk had proposed a credit for defense, allowing Ukraine the opportunity to pay after the war was over.
Sikorski explained that the deal could have been done earlier: “Here you go, purchase weapons on credit from Polish factories and when you recover you’ll repay it.”
Sikorski clarified, when asked about Zelenskyy’s recent statement “Poland found yet another reason not provide MiG-29 planes,” that it was part a larger, spontaneous comment about the war’s challenges.
The official claimed that “it’s not like the president has specifically attacked Poland.”
Sikorski responded, stating that Poland had done “more” than any other country. He also noted that “Poland was on the front lines of this war.” We are the only EU or NATO country that has both Russia and Ukraine in its neighborhood. “Ukraine understands that we also need to hold Putin back.”
The diplomat emphasized that Poland has its unique defense needs.
“As Polish Government Ministers, Deputy Premier KosiniakKamysz (and I) must work to keep this conflict as far away from our borders as we can,” he said.
Sikorski acknowledged that members of the US House of Representatives had recently appealed to President Joe Biden to allow Poland to intercept Russian rockets over Ukraine.
“Poland will take this decision with NATO,” he said, adding that “no decision has yet been made.”
Sikorski called for understanding of Zelenskyy “who is going though a difficult time” in Ukraine.
Andrzej Dda, the Polish president, said earlier that Poland was one of the first and most generous donors to Ukraine after Russia’s full scale invasion in 2022. It provided rapid military assistance using its own stockpiles. These reserves are now largely depleted.
“A responsible politician cannot simply transfer new weapons,” Duda said, suggesting that Poland had reached its limits in terms of what it could provide without compromising security.
Journalists found documents that showed Belarusian companies were using Poland to bypass EU sanctions. They falsified records to pass off Belarusian wood as coming from Kazakhstan.
