The vehicle, which features an enhanced design and SICH Heavy Combat Module, demonstrated stable performance during firing tests with its 30-mm automatic cannon.
Militarnyi reported on 3 November that the Ukrainian VARTA-2 armored vehicle had entered state testing. Economichna Pravda published footage of the vehicle maintaining its stability when facing broadside fire from a 30mm automatic gun. Representatives of Ukrainian Armor stated that the vehicle was undergoing tests to be codified by the Ministry of Defense. This is in preparation for possible contracting by Defense Forces.
Ukraine is investing heavily in its defense industry, despite limited supplies from allies. This will increase self-reliance and provide a steady supply of military equipment. This strategic approach is designed to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign aid, while strengthening its defense capabilities in the face of the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian conflict.
The vehicle is equipped with the Ukrainian SICH combat modules, which were first seen on armored vehicles of the Defense Forces earlier this year. The module is a turret with a ZTM-1 30mm automatic cannon and an AG-30 automatic launcher. It also has a PKT 7.62mm machine gun. All of these are remotely controlled by the vehicle.
In an interview with Militarnyi the company’s chief said that developers are adapting the module specifically for Varta. They will reduce its weight and modify the artillery component in order to decrease recoil for improved stability.
The VARTA 2 was first revealed in early September. The redesign has reduced weight while increasing protection to STANAG level 3a/3b, offering defense against 7.62x51mm armor-piercing round and explosions using 8 kg of TNT.
NATO AEP 55 STANAG 4569, a NATO standard that sets protection levels for occupants in light and logistic armored vehicles. Level 3 covers 7.62x51mm AP rounds fired at 30 meters, 8kg AT mine blasts (three types: 3a for explosions under the wheel/track, and 3b under the center), and 155mm artillery shell impact at 60 meters.
VARTA 2 is the first Ukrainian 4×4 armoured vehicle equipped with a heavy battle module, which includes a 30 mm automatic cannon.
