After a tense run-off election, Maia Sandu, Moldova’s pro EU President, has claimed a new term.
Sandu won 55% of the votes after most of them were counted. In a speech late at night, she promised to be the president for all Moldovans.
Her rival, Alexandr Stoianoglo who was backed pro-Russian Party of Socialists had called for closer ties with Moscow.
During the day, the president’s adviser on national security said that there had been “massive” interference from Russia in Moldovan electoral process which had “high potential for distorting the outcome”.
Russia has already denied any interference in the election.
Stoianoglo has denied being pro Kremlin. He was fired by Sandu as the prosecutor general.
Both Maia Sandu and her opponent thanked voters as the polls closed.
