In order to improve its defenses, Poland launched the construction of “Eastern Shield”, a fortification project on its borders with Russia. The project, which will include modern detection systems, is expected to be finished by 2028 and cost more than $2.5 billion.
According to Ukrinform, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that Poland has begun building fortifications along the border with Russia, Belarus and Ukraine as part of a large-scale project called “Eastern Shield”.
Piotr Lukasiewicz (Poland’s charge d’affaires in Ukraine) had earlier stated that the “Eastern Shield Project” is designed to protect the country from potential invasions by Russia and Belarus, and is based upon Ukraine’s experiences.
In 2022, Poland installed a modern electronic surveillance system and a 5.5 meter high, 186 km long barrier at the border with Belarus. The barrier was built in response to the artificial migration crises created by Belarus and Russia in summer 2021 along the border between Belarus Poland and the Baltic States.
The construction of the “Eastern Shield” has begun! Tusk shared photos of excavators digging trenches near the border with Russia.
Poland is also increasing its military presence on the border. Plans are in place to increase troop numbers from 6,000 up to 8,000 with an additional 9,000 soldiers on standby. This military buildup is a part of a larger strategy to prepare for full-scale war, as Polish officials stress the need for preparedness against potential threats from east.
