Salome Zurabishvili, the President of Georgia, criticized the diplomats of Georgia for their silence on November 3, the Day of Georgian Diplomacy. She referred to the Georgian government as “trampling the longed-for European Path” and “steps towards Russia.”
Zurabishvili wrote on social media: “I can’t congratulate you for the day of diplomacy.” What do you have left if you don’t dare resign, raise your voice, or express a different view? Are you so scared?” asked the president to Georgian diplomats.
Zurabishvili stated that the Day of Georgian Diplomacy was established on her initiative 20 years ago and is linked to the name of Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani who was a Georgian writer and diplomat of XVII and XVIII century, who reached out and sought assistance from European monarchs in support of then King Vakhtang 6.
“We should celebrate such an anniversary proudly!” “This is all the more true, because Sulkhan Saba is one of the most important figures in our European aspirations and the European path which we can only achieve by diplomacy,” said she.
The President said, “Peace in the country is at risk when there is poor diplomacy.” Freedom is at risk when those who serve their country are afraid of themselves! “Our independence is at risk when those who should be alerting our partners abroad to Russia’s hybrid tactics do not and can’t take notice.”
She also criticized the diplomats who did not work for the Georgian Diaspora in order to facilitate their participation in the elections.
“History won’t forget this, so stop mentioning Sulkhan Saba!” You are not saving yourself by mentioning him and you are putting a shadow over his name!
One Georgian diplomat, Gocha Javakhishvili (Ambassador of Georgia to France), has protested the anti-democratic acts of the government, and its detachment with the West, by resigning. Others have remained silent.
