Finland closes the world’s only Lenin Museum outside Russia

The Lenin Museum, the only museum outside of Russia dedicated to Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, closed its doors on Nov. 3, 2009.
The Finnish authorities have announced that a new political museum will open at the same location on February 15, 2025. The museum’s focus will be on Finnish-Russian relationships, according to reports.
The Lenin Museum, the first permanent Lenin exhibit outside of Russia, was founded in 1946. The Lenin Museum is located in the same building where Lenin met the first time during a secret Bolshevik gathering.
The exhibitions tell the story of Lenin’s life, as well as the history of Finnish-Soviet Relations.
Kalle Kallio, the director of the museum, told AFP that after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on a large scale in 2022, its name had “become a heavy burden”. Visitors were put off by the name, but Kallio clarified that the museum had no connection to the Russian government.
The new museum, “Nootti”, will provide information on the evolution of Finland’s relations with Russia in the 21st Century.
Since the full-scale Russian invasion, relations between Finland and Russia are deteriorating. In response to the conflict, Finland joined NATO on April 20, 2023, extending NATO-Russia border by approximately 1,340 kilometers (830 mi).
