During her visit to Kyiv, the German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock announced that Germany will provide 200 millions euros ($217million) in winter humanitarian aid as Ukraine prepares itself for more Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Baerbock said the funding would be used for those affected by severe power disruptions, so “Ukrainians could be provided with essentials like blankets or warm winter jackets to protect themselves from freezing temperatures.”
Officials in Ukraine have warned that Moscow has been preparing to strike against Ukrainian energy plants ahead of winter months. It wants to plunge the country into an everlasting cold to break Ukrainians’ resolve.
Oleksiy Brkht, interim head of Ukraine’s state grid operator Ukrenergo said on October 29 that the country could be facing its most difficult winter since the beginning of Russia’s full scale invasion.
After meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha and President Volodyr Zelensky, the German Minister announced the funding for aid.
Baerbock, a Reuters reporter, said that upon his arrival: “We are countering the brutality of this regime with our humanity and support so that Ukrainians not only survive winter, but that their country can also survive.”
The additional humanitarian assistance is separate from the previous commitments made by Germany to boost Ukraine’s infrastructure in energy ahead of the winter.
According to Baerbock Berlin has committed an extra 170 million euro ($185 million) for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Germany has played an important role in providing energy assistance to Ukraine, and bolstering its air defenses to prevent further attacks.
Sybiha reported that during the meeting in Kyiv the delegations discussed the “need to take decisive action” as a response to the North Korean troops stationed along the eastern front of Ukraine.
Annalena Bärbock, the German Foreign Minister, said that she was arriving in Ukraine and that “we are fighting this brutality by our humanity and support so that Ukrainians not only survive winter but that their country can also survive.”

According to the document, Kyiv will produce drones, parts and components for them, as well as electronic warfare systems, together with Vilnius.

In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree that allows foreigners who served in the Russian Army for a year on a contract basis, as well as close relatives of those individuals, to apply for Russian citizenship using a simplified process.
