Google representatives have begun discussions with Ukrainian authorities following the appearance of military positions on their mapping service.
The Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (CCD) reports that Google Maps updated satellite imagery has revealed the positions of Ukrainian military system.
The publication of military positions in maps that are accessible to the public could compromise Ukraine’s defence capabilities and provide strategic information to Russian forces. This poses a serious national security concern.
Andriy Kovalevenko, the head of the CCD, said: “Google is publishing maps that reveal the location of our military systems. I won’t say which).”
Google has been contacted by Ukrainian authorities regarding this situation.
Kovalenko said that Google representatives reached out the Ukrainian side in order to resolve the issue with the military system imagery.
In September, CCD representatives negotiated with Google. Kovalenko said that significant progress will be made to counter disinformation. “Many propagandists will not like this,” he said.
Google has been ordered to pay Russian companies two undecillion rubles, a number with 36 zeros, for the war propaganda they have used in Ukraine. This figure is reportedly increasing weekly.
Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, spoke at the Future Investment Initiative Conference in Saudi Arabia. He said that the US Military should replace tanks with AI powered drones. Schmidt cited the Russian war in Ukraine as an example of how a $5,000 drone could destroy a tank worth $5 million.
