In an interview with the Russian media group Russia Today on November 5, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rebutted allegations of Russian interference in Georgian elections. He also accused the West of interfering with Georgia’s internal affairs and expressed his willingness to normalize bilateral relations further with Georgia.
Lavrov, commenting on the claims of Russian interference in the October 26, parliamentary elections, stressed that these claims are “outright lies” and said: The Americans are trying to ascribe to us what they are themselves doing. He continued: “Washington continues actively to exploit the self-generated mystique of Russian interference in any elections, whether “at “home” or in a third country. If, by the results of an election, forces that are not liked by the United States win, Russia is immediately “blamed” for the wrong choice of voters.”
He stressed that Russia had already expressed its concerns over “the West’s unprecedented intervention” in Georgian internal affairs, and the “unscrupulous” pressure of the West on Georgian authorities and voter.
He also claimed that the U.S., and the EU were “artificially trying to present the electoral process in Georgia in a strategic way between Russia and the Western world,” and he claimed they wanted to “put Georgia and other post Soviet states in front a false fork on the road.”
He continued to say that, “in reality, it is a choice between a sovereign development based upon national interests and external governance; between traditional values and neoliberal attitude imposed from the outside.”
“The people of Georgia has made their choice.” We treat them with respect. “We are ready to continue normalizing bilateral relations,” Lavrov concluded.
