On November 29, Tbilisi announced its main New Year’s motto: “Tbilisi – City of Peace”. The same inscription will be installed by City Hall near the fairy-light Christmas Tree on Freedom Square.
Unsurprisingly, the choice of slogan drew a lot criticism from a wide section of society. This is because there is a war going on in Georgia’s friendly country – Ukraine.
On November 30, citizens rallied to demand a change in the New Year’s Slogan installed on Freedom Square.
“There was no political meaning in the New Year’s motto – there is only peace. What should we do as friends if we don‘t wish for peace? What should we do, friends, if we don’t wish for peace?
He said that the statements that Tbilisi’s 2023 slogan “City of Peace”, is a mockery of Ukrainians, are the worst speculations and provocation.
“This year our New Year’s motto will be ‘City of Peace.’ Peace is important for our country and for our city. In light of the challenges in the region and the world situation, peace is the first thing that everyone wants. I would like to comment on a disturbing trend. When the government, government of the capital or another agency voices an idea that is based on universal value, an initiative by the public, then bullying, insulting and slandering immediately begins. I don’t even know what to call it, but I am certain that this is not how our society operates. Yesterday, some media outlets and politicians attempted to portray our New Year’s motto as a mockery towards our Ukrainian friends. This is the worst speculation and provocation that a person who loves our country and city can ever do. I know that these people do not love, respect or have dignity for their homeland,” said Kaladze.
