Donald Trump is projected to win the battleground U.S. State of Pennsylvania, which has 19 Electoral College Votes.
Trump is now only four votes short of the 270 electoral votes needed to win.
Pennsylvania, a pivotal state with a large Ukrainian community, played a major role in the U.S. presidential elections of 2024. Both candidates have aggressively campaigned in the state. Trump and Harris held dueling rallies the night before the election.
Harris spent the day in Pennsylvania the night before the election, knocking at doors and leading five rallies across the state.
The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine was a major issue in Pennsylvania’s campaign. Harris supporters ran ads highlighting her commitment towards Kyiv to win votes from the traditionally conservative Eastern European communities.
During the presidential debate in Pennsylvania on Sept. 10, Harris addressed the Polish-Americans of the state, accusing Trump that he was currying favor with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
She said: “Why don’t tell the 800,000. Polish Americans here in Pennsylvania, how quickly you will give up for favors and what you believe is a friendship with a dictator that would eat you at lunch?”
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, visited Pennsylvania before the November elections to thank the workers at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant (located in the hometown of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden) for producing the critical 155 mm shells needed by Ukraine.
Zelensky’s visit drew the ire of U.S. Republicans who claimed that the trip constituted “election interference.”
The Trump campaign also planned to make a joint appearance with a foreign leader in Pennsylvania. Trump was supposed to appear alongside Polish President Andrzej duda at a Polish American Roman Catholic shrine near Philadelphia. However, the event has been canceled.
In the United States, presidential elections are not decided by popular vote but by a majority in the Electoral College. Each state has a certain number of votes, based on its population. The candidate who receives the most votes in that state will usually receive the state’s total electorate.
Pennsylvania has historically been a state that was a toss-up. In the six presidential election prior to 2016, Pennsylvania’s Electoral votes went to Democrats. In 2016, the state flipped to Trump, but Biden won in 2020 by just 1.2%.
Victoria Spartz, despite being the only U.S. legislator born in Ukraine did not vote in favor of the Senate foreign aid legislation that included more than $60 billion for Ukraine’s assistance in April 2024.
